The St. Giovanni Fortress is located 280m up from Kotor and is part of the city's fortification structure.
The fortress walls were already there by the IX century, and since then they've been fortified and rebuilt numerous times. The modern look was achieved during the reign of the Venecian Republic. Up until WWI the fortress, walls and bastions were used as genuine defense structures, warding off numerous attacks.
2 walking paths lead to the fortress — from the River Gate and the Salad Square, which then merge into one. Access to the paths are paid — 8 Euro. On the way a traveler can enjoy views on the town and the Bay of Kotor. There are a couple of observation decks and a medieval church.
